Object relations theory and the development of "Chaemyon"

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the development of "Chaemyon" from the theoretical perspective of object relations theory. "Chaemyon" which is considered as one of characteristics of Koreans is conceptualized into four aspects. Those four aspects of "Chaemyon" are (1) the tendency of keeping one¢¥s self- esteem through other people¢¥s perspectives, (2) the tendency of establishing and keeping relationships by meeting other¢¥s expectation and fulfilling one¢¥s role, (3) patterned behavioral characteristics which are consistent almost all social situations, and (4) the tendency which is expressed through formalistic attitude and role-oriented coping strategies in stressful situations. Development procedures of these four aspects of "Chaemyon" is explained based on object relations theory. Several implications of this study on the character education and counseling practice are also discussed.
